Providing Screenings to Individuals with Disabilities

People with disabilities are more vulnerable to risk factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, and obesity. They describe their health as “fair” or “poor” and are more likely to delay medical care due to barriers they face. Have you ever considered the barriers people with disabilities face in your practice? What barriers do you have control over and where do you start?

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services Disability and Health Program can help. We offer free online courses that provide best practices to help people with disabilities in the healthcare environment. The courses are designed to help reduce barriers in your office from appointment times, the physical environment, and forms that are more accessible and easier to read. You will receive 1 ½ free CME credits for completing the courses.

The two courses are self-paced and only take about 1 ½ hours to complete. You will learn how to decrease barriers from the time people with disabilities schedule an appointment on the phone to the moment they leave your office. You can help them feel cared for and respected.
